Born in 1985 in Tokyo. Raised in Kamakura. Born to a family operating a "sento" (communal bath house) called "Kabukiyu" in Kabukicho, the entertainment district in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. Studied painting and sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, later majoring in dyeing and weaving. Made research into the "oiran" (courtesan) culture and created kimonos and geta using the traditional "Yuzen-zome" technique. Set up own brand "NORITAKE TATEHANA" in 2010. The shoes he creates are completely handmade and have gained attention from both the fashion world and the art world. Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness wear his shoes.
