Born in Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture. Started playing the piano at the age of five, and from around age 20, started working as a studio musician. Since the 1980s, has been producing music for numerous famous Japanese artists. From the 1990s, started composing music for movies such as "Swallowtail" and "All About Lily Chou-Chou". In 2003, established "ap bank", a non-profit organization for environmental conservation. The NPO undertakes a variety of projects including those for natural energy, agriculture and aiding the reconstruction of areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake. In 2017, as part of reconstruction aid efforts, ap bank held the Reborn-Art Festival. The 51-day event, which was held mainly in Ishinomanoki City and Oshika Peninsula Miyagi Prefecture drew many visitors. Kobayashi's compilation album "Takeshi Kobayashi meets Very Special Music Bloods" which includes songs composed for the Tokyo Metro subway's TV commercials, was released on April 4, 2018.
