Born in 1958. After graduating from Tama Art University, he made his debut as a manga artist with his 1985 work Ereki na Haru (Electric Spring) while working full-time at a beer company. He left his day job in 1994. He received the Bungeishunju Manga Award for his 2000 books Jiji Oyaji 2000 (Old Man Current Affairs 2000, Aspect Corporation) and Yuruyuru Oyaji (Old Man Oblivious, Bungeishunju Ltd.), as well as the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award for Excellence in Comic Art Performance for his 2001 book Yajikita in DEEP.(Enterbrain Inc.)From 2002 he has drawn People of the Earth Defense Family, a comic strip serialized in the evening edition of The Asahi Shimbun newspaper. While drawing comics on a wide range of genres from gag comics to social commentary, he also does work in multiple other fields such as video and contemporary art. In 2014, he received the Japanese Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon.
