From Osaka Prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Industrial, Interior and Craft Design at Musashino Art University, he studied architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA School) in the UK in 2000 and graduated at the top of his class. That same year, he received the President's Medal (given for excellence in a Master's project in architecture within the UK) from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He then moved to Thailand, where he taught architecture from 2004 to 2008 at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). He then served as the director of the Architectural Xperimental Lab there from 2008 to 2010. In 2010, he co-founded ENERGY MEET, a company that engages in "energy design," with Masato Ashida. After the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, energy became an important social issue in Japan as well, and Onishi continues to strive towards establishing the field of energy design. He worked as an Associate Professor for the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies at Keio University from 2014 to 2020, and has been an Associate Professor for the Department of Environmental Science and Design at Showa Women's University since 2020. Together with teachers from KMUTT, he also founded Energy Design Network (EDN), a platform for creating international industry-academia collaborative projects, where he serves as Co-Director (from 2019).
