Born in Tokyo. Won the 26th Kimura Ihei Award in 2001. Her first feature film as director, "Sakuran" was formally invited to the 57th Berlin International Film Festival and the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival. In 2008, her solo exhibition went on tour in Japan and 180,000 people attended altogether. In 2010, photography book "MIKA NINAGAWA" was published from Rizzoli N.Y. and drew people's attention in the world. Her second feature film 'Helter Skelter" was released in 2012. The ticket sales went over 2,200,000,000 yen and she won the silver prize of Shindo Kaneto Award with this film. In 2016 she had a big solo exhibition in the modern art museum in Taipei (MOCA Taipei). She became an executive board member of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
