Born in 1968 in Kumamoto Prefecture. In 1983, at age 15, moved to America. After graduating from the Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts, studied environmental design at Parsons School of Design. In 1994, started working as a photographer in New York. Worked on numerous CD jackets and was also involved in making music videos and commercials. Debuted as a film director in 2004 with "Casshern". Directed "Goemon" which was released in 2009. Author of novel "Tora to karasu to Ayako no yume" (The dreams of the tiger, the crow, and Ayako." (published by Gentosha). Much talk was generated by Sandaime J Soul Brothers' "Unfair World" released in 2015, a music video Kiriya directed for the first time in seven years. In November 2015, his latest work and first Hollywood movie "Last Knights" was released.
