Born in 1965 in Niigata Prefecture. Graduated from Graduate School of Fine Arts at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1991.
With themes such as pretty girls, war scenes, and businessmen, Aida's works depict social phenomena and historical events, effortlessly blending elements from the present and the past, and from the West and East. The bizarre contrasts and sharp criticism that define his works have won strong fans of all ages. Has held many exhibitions in Japan and other countries.
Among his main exhibitions are the following: ""Roppongi Crossing - New Visions in Japanese Art 2004" (Mori Art Museum, 2004), "Belief" (Singapore Biennale, 2006) , "Exhibition by Akira Yamaguchi and Makoto Aida" (The Ueno Royal Museum, 2007), "Bye Bye Kitty!!! - Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art"" (Japan Society, New York, 2011), and "The Best of Times, The Worst of Times, Rebirth and Apocalypse in Contemporary Art" (The First Kyiv International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Ukraine, 2012). His wide-ranging activities include working with "The Group 1965"made up of artists born in 1965, and with the puppet theater company GEKIDAN☆SHIKI owned his artist wife Hiroko Okada as well as writing novels and manga.
